Sinhalese distrust of India runs deep. Over two millenniums, Sri Lanka's Buddhist majority has fought back periodic invasions from Hindu India. Officials wavered over what to do with the immigrants, who had fled India alleging that the majority Hindus were discriminating against the Sikhs.
