Camacho infuriated much of the P.R.I. by using his position in the peacemaking spotlight to hint that he might make an independent run for the presidency. Uncertainty over his spoiler potential had ruffled the stock market and shaken the peso. Only last Tuesday, the day before Colosio was murdered, did the ex-mayor finally announce he would stick to the peace talks rather than run. But he had already made life difficult for Colosio by focusing attention on the government's failure to provide basic services for the poorest parts of the country and putting pressure on the candidate...

Hundreds of pale, war-fatigued Sarajevans turned out to cheer when their familiar red streetcars went back into service. Their daily lives had long been framed by falling shells, and the friendly clanging of the trams sounded like a hint of peace, a bit of normality now that a NATO ultimatum had silenced the Serbian siege guns. The streetcars must have carried the same symbolism to Serb soldiers staring down from the hills around the city: last week a sniper fired into one of the jammed cars and wounded a passenger, and 12 people were killed elsewhere in the city...

...Avedon brought his camera to the Berlin Wall on the nights that thousands of people gathered on either side to celebrate its fall. The Whitney retrospective ends with the pictures he made there. Strobe-lit crowd shots full of wild spirits, they hint that freedom has its demented side and that the end of communism might unleash new terrors of its own. Are those pictures pure reporting, or are they artifice? And is this the right line of inquiry? Perhaps instead of worrying about where Avedon falls on the continuum between death and Dovima, we should recognize that his pictures...

...following a hint first dropped by Hillary Rodham Clinton in an interview with TIME, White House sources are beginning to acknowledge that, well, er, maybe there were some errors. Mrs. Clinton told columnist Mary McGrory that she and her husband may have taken at least one deduction that had already been claimed by a corporation, presumably Whitewater. The First Source, Bill Clinton, followed up by telling reporters that any underpayments "certainly were not intentional." Said he: "I don't think we owe any extra taxes, but I'm not sure yet. If we do owe, we'll make it good...

...There's beaucoup bustle but not much pulse. The pace is too slow for farce, the characters too cartoony for drama. Whereas His Girl Friday ran its gags on the fast track, The Paper often slows down to lend its galaxy of star types (Robert Duvall, Jason Alexander) a hint of dimension to their roles. But these subplots aren't much more sophisticated than those in The Wizard of Oz: Duvall gets a heart, Close a brain, Keaton courage. Tomei gets a baby -- and gets left...
