...Shanghai not long ago, I took a walk from my hotel along Nanjing Road to the Bund, the promenade on the banks of the Huangpu where visitors from China's hinterland gather to gaze across the river, awestruck, at the ultramodern skyscrapers of Pudong that have transformed the city's skyline in not much more than a decade. It wasn't what was on the far side, though, that got my attention: it was the traffic on the river itself, great container ships, chuffing lighters, bulk carriers, every sort of waterborne vessel you could imagine carrying every imaginable cargo, churning...

The story of the revolutionary who storms out of the hinterland in a lightning advance and seizes power is a familiar one, from Nkunda's native Democratic Republic of Congo to the Comoros Islands. Sometimes, as with Paul Kagame in Rwanda or with Yoweri Museveni in Uganda, the new leaders are an improvement. It is a piece of extraordinary vigor that makes one understand why John McCain would choose a backwoods Alaskan huntress as his running mate. Or at least it should do all of this. But in Opera Boston?...

...hate the idea of being the foreigner who likens everything to her homeland, but China’s hinterland increasingly resembles the American West. In some ways this makes me happy because everything alike about America and China, two fairly dissimilar nations, is one less reason for misunderstanding. Other times, though, this similarity is disconcerting. Maybe it is naive of me, but I’m surprised to realize that geography, like history, repeats itself...
