...longer. It may not yet be polite to say so, but the German question is back. The first widely noticed hint occurred this spring when the West German Foreign Minister, in a rare demonstration of German assertiveness, forced a change in the American position (and entirely undercut Britain) on the issue of short-range nuclear weapons. The issue is relatively minor, but the demonstration was not. It not only showed alliance willingness to accommodate German demands, it also showed German willingness to make them, and to make them purely and unashamedly in terms of its national interest...
...land on the roof of the theater. The music intensifies; the walls shake. No longer do you hear the music, you feel it rattling your rib cage, shaking your elbows, your knees, your thighs. Harmonies become distorted, and as they change, they disrupt the rhythm of your heartbeat. A hint of melody develops, disappears, reappears; it is the theme to E.T., except it appears to have been rewritten by someone under the influence of LSD. M appears onstage and the music subordinates itself to the patterns of her monologue, but only temporarily--it frequently rears up, roaring, driving M deeper...
...heard it right away. The Stones still have the stamina, but there's always at least a hint of strain in the music too, a self-consciousness about the energy, as if they were the oldest guys at the gym and trying to look good on the Nautilus. "Ridiculous," "hopeless," "nonsense," on the one hand; "doubtless," "obvious," "unquestionable," on the other, will have the same effect. A hint of nostalgic, anti-academic languor at this stage as well may match the grader's own mood: "It seems more than obvious to one entangled in the petty quibbles of contemporary Medievalists--at times, indeed, approaching the ludicrous--that smile as we may at its follies, or denounce its barbarities...
Still, the productions were mostly brief and small-scale, the livelihood far from lavish. "The least hint of the starving-artist routine," he recalls, "did not behoove my immigrant legacy of belief in education and upward mobility." In 1983, when he was 26, Hwang suffered the sort of crisis of conscience that comes to many people whose success was quick and easy. "I lost belief in my subject matter -- I dismissed it as 'Orientalia for the intelligentsia' -- and virtually stopped writing for two years. I thought seriously about going to law school." After the anxiety passed, Hwang tried to broaden...
