...reasons. Because the clockmaker's search for a motive is the only spring that propels the plot, the film sags frequently along the way. Only Noiret's performance keeps us from losing interest entirely as we wait and wait for Bernard to be nabbed or for some new hint about his motive to turn up. Noiret resists any temptation to make Descombes a heroic, larger-than-life figure; he is just a regular guy sweating out an embarrassing and very painful problem. And since he works out his trouble with only an ordinary intelligence and a rather blunt sensibility...

...Futureworld, Delos is back in business, run by the sinisterly avuncular Arthur Hill. Everything seems to be humming smoothly, but there is more than a hint that Hill is using the place for his own dastardly purposes. Two ace journalists-an irreverent newspaperman (Peter Fonda) and an anxious, abrasive broadcaster (Blythe Danner) -trace down the truth to the very bowels of Delos itself. Futureworld is daffy and easy to take, with a relaxed, ingratiating performance by Fonda and a very witty, rambunctious one by Ms. Danner, who is altogether one of the niftiest actresses around. Resemblances between Ms. Danner...

...Haldeman's offer to testify against Ehrlichman and others in exchange for pleading guilty only to a single felony charge: "[Haldeman's lawyer John] Wilson sought to keep the conversation going, trying a number of times to get the judge [John Sirica] to give some hint of the length of sentence Haldeman could expect. Each time the judge waved the query aside, repeating, 'He'll have to take his chances...

...average 18.3 miles per gallon, or 10% more than the '76 models. As expected, GM also announced price increases, averaging about 6%, that will push the price tag for a typical car to about $6,000 (the average 1967 GM auto cost $3,000). Murphy dropped an elephantine hint to the U.A.W. to be reasonable; he expressed hope that no further price boosts on the '77s will be required. One other cloud on the auto horizon, the threat of a tire shortage, seems to be dissolving. The United Rubber Workers and Firestone announced tentative agreement on a contract...

...second LP confirms a talent that makes her a strong contender for Aretha Franklin's title as queen of soul pop. At her best getting down with hand-clapping, shooby-dooby funk, Cole tends toward dance-oriented tunes. Her voice is fresh and breezy, with more than a hint of Sarah Vaughan filigree. Well suited to Vegas show songs like Mr. Melody or the disco soul sparkler Touch Me, she lacks the weight for emotionally stormy ballads like Heaven Is with You. There, her voice sounds as insubstantial as powdered sugar...
