...imposed conformity. It begins when the last political prisoner in an unnamed nation signs his confession and reconciles himself to "the Infant and his uncle the Regent," which means that everybody in "the best state in the world" has attained a state of "perfect loyalty," with "not a hint of incipient disloyalty," as various characters tell one another with maddening frequency. By the time someone began screaming that "the people have become wildly, cruelly, bestially loyal," I felt for him. I really...

...sort of ordeal that triggers the adrenalin of angry young men afflicted Britain's young (30) Playwright John (Look Back in Anger) Osborne. It became known that a television producer had rejected Osborne's very first TV effort, with a broad hint that it was amateurish. Abed with flu. Osborne grumped unsportingly: "Television is to the theater what etching is to oils." Then word leaked that still another producer had bounced the same script. While the plump infant grasps for her breast, the mother appears gaunt; and the multitude of lines evoking the forms of her collar-bone, neck and face seem to suggest a network of veins to her breast. The hint of despair in her eye reinforces the impression that she is being sucked dry by her thoughtless, greedy child. In its bitter message, stated with subtlety and thoughtfulness, this work provides a revealing antithesis to the view of children implicit in Amen's prettified prints like To Wonder...
