Body talk is relevant here, because it's the most obvious hint that Casino Royale means to be a very different Bond movie. The 21st in the official series produced by the Broccoli family (two others--a spoof called Casino Royale and a freelance Sean Connery opus, Never Say Never Again--were made outside the fold), this one tries to rejuvenate a 44-year-old franchise that was showing signs of tired blood and losing its appeal to the young-male action-film demographic. The writers--Bond veterans Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, along with the ubiquitous Paul Haggis...

...even deeper into the pockets of its faithful riders. Given the large number of students living and traveling in and around Boston, it is unclear exactly who the MBTA thinks is in a position to help solve its financial problems by paying increased fares. Here’s a hint: It’s not students. We have even less money than they do, and it is unfair to expect us and other Boston-area residents to pick up the tab for poorly conceived expansion projects that were often opposed in the first place...

Patricia McCormick is not the kind of writer who sits at her keyboard waiting for inspiration. She's the kind of writer who finagles her way into a Kathmandu jail to interview a young Nepali man awaiting trial. He told McCormick without a hint of embarrassment that he had sold his fiancé. Why? The U.S. President is committing a mistake by rejecting dialogue. I believe that dialogue is the only way out of this conflict. History shows that peace is never a result of war. Leaders like Ahmadinejad must be taken seriously-and not in spite of but because of different views of the world. Ahmadinejad was fundamentally right in saying, "Everywhere in the world, people are good." If all world leaders shared his view, we would be on the path...

More fundamentally, the discomfort of some progressives with any hint of religiosity has often inhibited us from effectively addressing issues in moral terms. Some of the problem is rhetorical: Scrub language of all religious content and we forfeit the imagery and terminology through which millions of Americans understand both their personal morality and social justice. Imagine Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address without reference to "the judgments of the Lord," or King's "I Have a Dream" speech without reference to "all of God's children." Their summoning of a higher truth helped inspire what had seemed impossible and move...
