...RIAD EL FENN, MARRAKESH The mood in the Riad El Fenn (www.riadelfenn.com), owned by art collector Vanessa Branson, is hip and hugely eclectic. In the hallway an unmistakable Bridget Riley - all colorful zigzag brickwork - is juxtaposed with rows of leather slippers and mirrors, which immediately lend the painting a Moroccan edge. A stunning light sculpture inspired by a hookah pipe and crafted out of meter-long handblown glass vessels by New Zealander Francis Upritchard vies for attention with small studies in carbon and casein donated by sculptor Antony Gormley after he stayed at the hotel. Every flavor of Democrat--and then some--turned up for the big show in Denver. Hip young Obamacrats, Newport-smoking grudge carriers from Team Hillary stomping around in sensible shoes and, of course, a walking forest of gung-ho environmentalists. Before helping shape the sound of the second half of the 20th century, he was the Billboard reporter who coined rhythm and blues to replace the category "race music" on the magazine's charts. With Ahmet Ertegun, he co-piloted Atlantic Records, once saying the label made "black music for black adults." But that underestimated the impact of the classics he produced--Aretha Franklin's Respect, Percy Sledge's When a Man Loves...

...Barack Obama and the Democrats, it all comes down to this: Should Obama try to win by running up big numbers among the young liberals and well-off independents who cheer his hip style of designer politics? Or should he concentrate on recapturing the older and decidedly unhip working-class voters who rejected him in droves during the primaries...
