President Garfield, the son of the late James A. Garfield, the twentieth president of the United States, was born at Hiram, Ohio, in the year 1863. He was graduated from Williams College in 1885, and studied at the Columbia Law School for a year. He then pursued his law studies abroad at Oxford College and at the Inns of Court, London. From 1888 to 1903 he practiced law at Cleveland in the firm of Garfield, Garfield, and Howe.
