Horowitz is as much despised among Externalists as Chambers was at Georgetown dinner parties during the Alger Hiss case years ago. Among racial intellectuals, Horowitz is "Not Our Class, Dear." Hating Whitey--with its inflammatory title--deserves a reading. Horowitz is angry and polemical, but he is also a clear and ruthless thinker. What he says has an indignant sanity about it. For cautionary perspective in an argument like this, it pays to remember that Hiss was guilty and Chambers was right...
...really afraid after watching the movie The Blair Witch Project--afraid to trust a movie critic's rating again. This movie deserves a -3 1/2 stars for its predictable plot, endless photographic jarring and idiotic f______ dialogue. If this is a 3 1/2-star movie, boo, hiss--and help! JUDY COLTON Lititz...
Heidegger was a towering philosopher but an odious man with Nazi sympathies. Whittaker Chambers was mostly right about communism and Alger Hiss, but he was a nasty piece of work and no one likes a snitch. Even Joe McCarthy may have been on to something, but he was a crude and cruel man who ruined people's lives for 48-point type. You might call this the When Bad People Spoil Good Things school of history...
...real world," writes Hiss, "there is no way to squeeze together in one person the translucent father I got to know and the monstrous Alger that Chambers talked and wrote about." Hiss makes his case by quoting at length the lovely letters Alger wrote to him and Priscilla from the Lewisburg federal penitentiary, where he served three years and eight months in the early '50s. In effect, says Tony, the letters--gentle, loving, teasing, serene, filled with the observations of a bird watcher and stargazer--exonerate Alger. Bad things happen to good people. Alger's creed was not Marxism...
...McCarthy as a portrait of a live character and force of nature--country-boy chicken farmer, charmer, weasel, patriot, bully, loose cannon and for all that, the spokesman for a valid American intuition (fear, if you like). In an atmosphere compounded of the Soviet enslavement of Eastern Europe, the Hiss conviction, the detonation of the first Soviet nuclear bomb, the communist takeover of China and the invasion of South Korea, something was wrong in the world. The opening of Soviet archives after the collapse of the U.S.S.R., together with the Venona decryptions, which the National Security Agency began releasing...
