This year's (or should one say this month's?) Alfred Hitchcock pastiche is of the sober rather than the raffish variety. It is intended not as a knockoff but as an hommage (the French pronunciation on that word, if you please) to the Old Master's late high style. The stars, Roy Scheider and Meryl Streep, are pleasing people; Nestor Almendros' carefully burnished cinematography imparts to Manhattan's streets a theatrically menacing glow that subtly transforms and romanticizes their mean reality. Writer-Director Benton, working from a story he and his onetime partner David...
...house hallmarks: askew humor, good pace that is not in too much of a hurry for character, smart acting, quirky scripts. One recent show, written by Lee Zlotoff and directed by Jeff Bleckner, borrowed, with shrewd and subtle acknowledgment, not only a plot device but a character from Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest and did its source no dishonor. ...better than Grace Kelly during the six years (1951-56) that her film career flared so beguilingly, and what fascinated the groundlings was that she seemed to be living the roles as well. Last week, 28 years after she met Prince Rainier of Monaco during the filming of Alfred Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief, and 26 years after she gave up acting to marry him and become the reigning Princess of his 467-acre tax haven and gambling oasis, she came to the poignant and unexpected end of an astonishing script...
...Norman Bates is back. It is 22 years since the friendly motelkeeper played by Anthony Perkins, 50, was led away to a California mental institution after his classic bathroom murder of Janet Leigh, 55, in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. Middle-aged and pronounced cured, Norman has returned to town and wants to revamp his sagging hostelry. Directed by Richard Franklin, 34, who worked with Hitchcock as a student, Psycho II picks up the few surviving characters from the master's original. Vera Miles, 51, returns as Leigh's sister, "and Mom is definitely six feet under...
