Associate Editor Ed Magnuson, who wrote the story, is a veteran of 26 TIME covers, dating back to 1962 and encompassing the full range of domestic debate over the war. Magnuson is a former Navy man, having done a two-year hitch before he went on to study journalism at the University of Minnesota in 1948. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate, Magnuson worked for ten years as a reporter and assistant city editor on the Minneapolis Tribune before coming to TIME in 1960. This time, the human flesh proves poor bait; Gimbel and his crew ply beneath three oceans without success. But even the failures are captivating. Divers hitch rides on sea turtles; monumental schools of twitching fish gather and separate at every sudden plane of light. The water is like heavy blue air in which natural law is suspended. Time seems liquid, depth and risk meaningless-until Gimbel surfaces too quickly and doubles over with the bends. Above sea level, the film itself wears gills, fins and horns. After a day of intensive interrogation-without legal counsel-he gave police an oral statement that the Bergen County prosecutor's office claimed was an unsigned confession. Smith disavowed it during his trial, but he was convicted after less than...

...section called "Good Things To Do"-presumably about extra-curriculiar activities-we get, among other goodies, an article by a first-year B-School student about the unfulfilled promise of the Coop. The other "good things to do" are political campaigning for liberal congressmen, skiing, hitch-hiking, visiting the countryside (illustrated by third-rate Sierra Club-style photographs adorned with Whitman quotes), and the Hasty Pudding Show. This latter good thing is a perfect demonstration of Three Thirty Five's lack of editorial credibility and clarity. I, for one, don't feel that a drag show put on for half...

...Columbia and became a leading mathematical statistician. As dean of the Stanford graduate school, he sharply improved its faculty, then left in 1963 to create a first-rate graduate program at CUNY. Because of his unusual record of academic, political and social expertise, University of California President Charles J. Hitch recommended only one man to head Berkeley-Bowker...
