...Walt Disney's Tunesmith Oliver Wallace for a picture originally entitled Donald Duck in Nutzi-land, skyrocketed so fast that Disney decided to change the title of the picture to that of the song. Also rocketing to fame on the song's beer-barrel phrases was a hitherto obscure drummer named Lindley Armstrong ("Spike") Jones. Jones, whose band, The City Slickers, first recorded Der Fuehrer's Face, found himself suddenly thrust up among the top U.S. bandleaders. Until then "Spike" had been modestly playing what he calls "society music" (jazzed up Chopin and Debussy) at Los Angeles...
With this book Matthew Josephson fills a gaping hole in U.S. biographical writing (hitherto there has been no good life of Victor Hugo) and adds another superb study to his series of great French literary figures (Zola and His Time, Jean-Jacques Rousseau). In the U.S. the great champions of democracy have always been practical politicians. In France they have usually been literati...
Most vanadium used in the U.S. has been imported from Peru and Southwest Africa. Now vanadium can be extracted from Idaho phosphate deposits. Hitherto this has been impracticable because Idaho's 6,000,000,000 tons of phosphate rock contain only 500,000 tons of vanadium, a mere one-tenth to one-fourth of one per cent vanadium. This concentration would be too low for practicable extraction, were it not for the fact that Anaconda Copper Co. is already processing over 100,000 tons of phosphates a year as fertilizer. From this tonnage some 200 to 250 tons...
...Hitherto WTEL's German-language broadcasts (even those of the Rev. Kurt E. B. Molzahn, convicted last month of espionage) have been largely nonpolitical. For real political dope, many Philadelphia German-Americans listened to Dr. Goebbels by short wave. The man who pioneered WTEL's political counter-broadcasts is Dr. Robert M. W. Kempner, exiled Prussian Minister of Justice, now at the University of Pennsylvania...
...normalcy" after World War II as it did after World War I. "The only stability attainable in human affairs," says Carr, "is the stability of the spinning top or the bicycle. . . . The survival of democracy depends on its ability to establish control over those economic forces which have hitherto defied its authority...
