...Beijing's Obstacle Course In "The Olympic Challenge," Pico Iyer insinuates that the world will regret awarding China the 2008 Olympics as it did with the 1936 Games in Berlin [Aug. 4]. Why even mention that established architect Albert Speer, the son of Hitler's architect, contributed to the design of the event? China is not without indiscretions, but to equate the country with the Nazi regime is reprehensibly unjust. Winston Wang, Princeton...
...There is a precedent for this. I was part of the Carter Administration when we brandished the Olympic torch as a symbolic weapon in 1980, pulling out of the Summer Games in Moscow after the Russian invasion of Afghanistan. The Soviet Union had planned a propaganda show reminiscent of Hitler's 1936 Olympics in Berlin. America's boycott delivered a body blow to President Leonid Brezhnev and his communist system and prevented Moscow from enjoying a world-class triumph...
...long-winded and badly written, a tirade against all things non-German that would have disappeared if its author had never managed to turn many of his vile words into action. Adolf Hitler's notorious Mein Kampf (My Struggle), a manifesto posing as autobiography, has long been banned from German bookshelves "out of a responsibility and respect for the victims of the Holocaust." But 83 years after it was first published, some Germans argue it should be made available again in order to drain it of whatever power it might still have...
...Nazi Party Rally Grounds. "We have to supply them with objective arguments and give them the ability to hold their own in the political and publicity debate." This, says historian Wolfgang Altgeld from the University of Würzburg, could be done through a step-by-step commentary of Hitler's hate-filled harangue that would also uncover "where he copied from others" and which elements of his life story "are pure fiction...
South Africa Iyer's piece states "Beijing even invited Albert Speer, the son of Hitler's architect, to help design a major axis." This sentence implies a connection between the present Chinese administration and the Nazi regime. This is an enormous exaggeration. The handling of democratic development and minorities by the Chinese government are not to my liking, but the atrocities of the Nazi regime were committed on a much larger scale. The government of the People's Republic of China must be criticized with frank words, but this essay violates TIME's usual standards. Dr. Clemens Derndorfer, GALLNEUKIRCHEN, AUSTRIA...
