...Harvard came back. "We fought back tooth and claw in that first game," designated hitter Chicarello said. With reliever Mike Smerczynski derailing the Quakers, the Crimson pulled to within 5-4 on two singles, a walk, and a two-run single by Brad Bauer, a two-base error by Penn's Paul Kupeha and a triple by Chicarello. And when Allard singled home Bauer with one out in the seventh, the score was tied...
...emergence of Smerczynski as the bullpen ace. The fireballer picked up his first win with a strong performance in the opener, whiffing Paul Kupcha in the seventh with probably the best fastball thrown all day. His one mistake, a change-up which number two hitter Steve Flacco pelted for a single, was erased when Vinnie Martelli gunned down Flacco as the Quaker tried to steal second...
First baseman Martelli led the 13-hit Harvard attack, solving Lion Doug Softy for a double and two singles, and knocking in a pair of runs. Freshman Bruce Weller continued to excel in the leadoff spot, rapping out two hits in five at bats. ...some good news, Nahigian has found his lead-off hitter in freshman center fielder Bruce Weller. A quick singles hitter with a bit of power, Weller has matched his solid play in the pasture with a nice performance at the plate. He walks often (11 in 64 plate appearances), can steal bases and has hit around .330 all season. Nothing special compared to Columbia's kiddie corps, but good enough for second on the team around here...
