...carried our suitcases to our second-story sleeper on the silver superliner. "Your bathroom has two buttons--one to flush, one to turn on the shower." Sure enough, our deluxe bedroom had a private "bathroom" with a shower right over the toilet and a drain on the floor! Hmmm. Our compartment also included a long sofa-like seat (which converted to a double bed) with a view out the window and a chair across the way. There was also a berth near the ceiling, accessible by ladder, to be pulled down later. However eccentric its facilities, the "room" offered more...

...they are the first to pull it off. Stein, who recently exposed the shopping habits of Leonardo DiCaprio and this week reveals the carnivorous appetites of 'N Sync., says, "I hate scatological humor, but I don't mind writing about it if it serves a higher purpose." Hmmm. The equally versatile Ratnesar, who within the past year has covered George W. Bush, Chinese espionage and Kosovar refugees, also has a second story in this issue. ...problem is that the songs never quite get there. Are they melodious? Yes. Lyrical? Yes. Passionate? Hmmm. The lyrics are, but as far as the mood goes, mellow is a far more appropriate adjective. Each song is contemplative and smooth, but no track is dynamic enough in its own right to ever truly distinguish itself. The title track comes close, but never fully peaks. ...began, unpromisingly: "What's so bad about conformity?" The message came from a man of Mexican ancestry, born in the U.S. To be fair, I think he meant: "What's wrong with conformity in the matter of good manners?" I agree. But the e-mail was entitled, "Rednecks Rule?" Hmmm. I wrote back to the guy and asked why it was permissible for him to use the term "redneck" when it would presumably bring on a fine, a suspension and sensitivity training if a "redneck" were to use the term "wetback...

...workman here the other day," Laybourne says at her office in Oxygen's loftlike downtown Manhattan headquarters (very new-media-start-up, very exposed-pipes-and-brick). "He said, 'Hmmm. Network for women. What're you going to do, fashion?'" Not exactly. When the channel launches on Feb. 2 (the date, 02/02, plays off the chemical symbol for oxygen), it will offer a mix of talk shows, comedy and women-oriented finance, sports and consumer shows, from a positive, sister-solidarity perspective. What "fashion" there is comes in forms like a comic riff on the empowering influence of a little...
