Heading into the 2009 season, the Harvard field hockey team could have fallen back on any number of excuses. Last season, Harvard field hockey squeaked by Holy Cross before stumbling to three straight losses. Perhaps after dominating the Crusaders in 2009, the Crimson can look forward to a better result. Like Semenya, Soundarajan, 28, comes from extremely modest beginnings. Born in the village of Kathakkurichi to brick-kiln workers in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, she was a versatile athlete in school, competing in field hockey, middle-distance running and javelin.
