Victor Wooten's playing was amazing as usual, but the man didn't hog the limelight. The most notable part of Wooten's contribution to the band (besides being the best bass player in the world) is his interplay with band and audience members alike. As he stood out on the thrust of the stage and talked through his instrument in a million ways, it became obvious exactly what the word 'virtuoso' meant. Some have termed Victor's playing "musical masturbation"--whatever it is, it feels good...
...shoo-in for re-election to the Tennessee state senate. The five-term Democrat's law-and-order views resonated with the folks of rural Putnam County along with his distinctive country twang. Early last week, though, Burks was silenced, fatally shot in the head on his hog farm while readying his pumpkin patch for an annual visit from schoolchildren. After a few days' search and a night of questioning, police announced an arrest and a murder charge. The suspect: Byron Looper, the local tax assessor--and more important, Burks' opponent in the upcoming election...

But for all his personal splinters--critics accuse him of being too ambitious and a publicity hog--Holbrooke has a real willingness to take risks...
...happy inspiration for Greenpeace to take its bus not just to port cities but inland too. In Howard County, Mo., the ocean activists meet Roger Allison and Rhonda Perry, family hog farmers. They complain that Missouri and its small farms are being lied to, undersold and fouled with reeking air and polluted water by huge, corporate-owned, factory-style hog operations. Dorry responds with the parallel case against factory fishing. "It's the same story here!" she says. "You guys are trying to make a living. The factories are making a killing...
...design, a fit subject for museum consideration, and in any case I'd rather look at a rampful of glittering dream machines than any number of tasteful Scandinavian vases or floppy fiber art. My only regret is that the show doesn't (so to speak) go the whole hog: with the exception of the iconic chopped Harley that Captain America rode in Easy Rider, everything in it is stock, so that it ignores the creative ingenuity that has gone into making the custom bike one of the distinctive forms of American folk...
