...spite of this, the music never sounds like trendy world music; the instruments themselves are so raw and poorly incorporated that the end result is a welcome departure from blandness. In comparison, Yorkston’s lyrics are unmemorable. Though hokey lines like “I’m sure we’ve got Sweet Jesus on our side” are regrettable, they’re so slurred that they’re easily ignored...
...Stonecipher thought it was hokey when he heard that his biotechnology convention was booked at the Wild Horse Pass Resort and Spa outside Phoenix, Arizona. The idea of a hotel designed around a western theme "sounded like a dude ranch," he says. Instead, the marketing manager from San Jose, California, found rooms decorated with authentic baskets and pottery from the native Pima and Maricopa tribes; an upscale spa that offered such Native American-inspired treatments as tashogith, a clarification bath using juniper and cypress; and the Kai restaurant, which features dishes like lobster with fry bread, an Indian staple. The €600,000 that it cost to bring the orchestra to Seville for three weeks, along with Barenboim and 10 music teachers from Berlin and Chicago - he directs Berlin's Deutsche Staatsoper and conducts the Chicago...
More ambitious both literarily and graphically, "Dumped" makes for the better read. It takes "Slow News Day" almost three times as long to cover the same emotional ground. Contrived plot points seem to be Watson's sticky wicket. The sudden sale of Katherine's hokey-sounding screenplay, forcing her to leave the paper, seems as unlikely as her not knowing the word "queue." "Dumped" likewise has some unbelievable circumstances, but they're at the service of a more ambitious statement so you forgive them. Among other things the book examines the importance of material objects in our lives - a smashed...
