While organizations like Barr's and Tate's maintain a tenuous hold on power, the party's real strength has been slipping away. In the past six years, the Democrats have lost two gubernatorial elections and one U.S. Senate contest. While the Republicans have been fielding attractive candidates like William Scranton. Hugh Scott and Raymond Shafer, and backing them with unite campaigns, the Democrats have been wasting their energies in destructive primary contests...
...assumptions, then we are not talking about the same animal. For me, reason and rationality are useful intellectual tools for uncovering the truth and for thinking effectively. Reason has never been for me an end-all, be-all sort of thing: when rationality and pragmatism gain too iron a hold over my life, then it's usually time to get a little "irrational" and break their grip. There can be little doubt that the NYU action was influenced less by any dispassionate appraisal of Hatchett and his responsibilities than by the racially charged circumstances under which Hatchett's statement was made, and the public pressure on NYU which that atmosphere produced...
...slightest possibility that Cornell will be emotionally down this week, following an exciting come-from-behind win over Rutgers and preceding next Saturday's showdown with Harvard. Penn has to be bursting with the unfamiliar pride of two straight wins, over Bucknell and Brown, but the Big Red will hold on for a 23-10 decision...
