...national production. That is intolerable in an economy beset by a 17% inflation rate, about 7% unemployment and a huge balance of payments deficit. So, when he announced a new austerity program recently, Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti included in it a measure to skip two civil and five religious holidays (among them: St. Joseph's Day on March 19, Republic Day on June 2, St. Peter and St. Paul Day on June 29) when they occur next year. Five of the seven days will be taken between Christmas and New Year's as a sort of national vacation...
Andreotti's real target is not the holidays themselves so much as a weekend-extending device known as il ponte (the bridge). When a holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, about 35% of Italy's work force routinely call in sick on Monday or Friday, using the day as a bridge to prolong the weekend to four days. This year, adept bridgers have been able to take off an extra 20 days with no loss in pay. But next year, with at most two midweek holidays on the fiesta calendar, bridging is doomed...
...started. The Marxist intellectual could scrutinize the ethnic bigotry and confusion, really very naive, of this pair of street-smart, macho New York adolescents. It's kind of culturally telling, you know, how they free associate from Turks and Indians to Native Americans and that most pious national holiday, Thanksgiving, then face off over whether or not their old ladies hump gobblers. The sociologist from HEW will tell us why Murph doesn't have anyone to go home to and devise training programs for sweet lady social workers so they don't give knives (for whittling wood) to hoodlums...
...hard to read straight through Forgotten America; I began to mentally illustrate how the form of a building conveys its meaning with my own experiences--what it signifies that Mather House is a fortress on the outskirts of Harvard's enclave, that Leverett House closely resembles a Holiday Inn, or that the Fogg imitates the palazzo of a Renaissance aristocrat. I was not daydreaming distractedly. The National Trust purposely relates their statements to individuals' experience by including exercises in architectural awareness (my favorite: "Find a building that repels you and ask yourself why."). An outline of styles in American architectural...
...first clue to the identity of the airline bombers came from a taxi driver in Trinidad who overheard two Spanish-speaking passengers discussing the Cubana "accident" shortly after the crash. Port of Spain police found that the pair had checked in-without luggage-at the downtown Holiday Inn. The two men, Freddie Lugo and Hernán Ricardo Losano, were traveling on Venezuelan passports; they had been on the arriving-passenger list of the ill-fated airliner in Barbados earlier in the day, but then flew back to Trinidad. After deplaning, investigators found, the pair placed a call to Orlando...
