The library's computer catalog, the Harvard On-Line Information System (HOLLIS), has several new features this year.
The system now provides electronic mail service, which enables users to transfer HOLLIS database records to their own electronic mailboxes. HOLLIS has also expanded to include references to the Physics Research Library.
Several first-years referred to the history of the rooms they will now occupy. Eli A. Silver '95, claiming that writer Henry David Thoreau had lived in Hollis Hall as an undergraduate, wondered aloud if he could charge admission if Thoreau's room turned out to be his own.
The pilot project is only the first stage in DeGennaro's plan. Future changes will further de-emphasize browsing and increase the use of Hollis and the Depository. All this, says DeGennaro, is an attempt to move the College Library from the "industrial to the technological age."
I am sure that there are people at this University organized enough to work out such a plan. I am not one of them. I am not sure I have ever even met one of them. I think of new things I want to look for when I am wedged...
