...would have been Starr vs. Ginsburg all right. I can still picture the scene in Judge Norma Holloway Johnson's courtroom. The judge has just admonished Starr for repeated, irrelevant citings of the Sherman Antitrust Act. Ginsburg is sneering, although he too has had to be told by Judge Johnson that the Marina del Rey tummy-tuck suit he keeps leaning on as a precedent is not germane in federal criminal cases. In the back row, a couple of criminal defense attorneys who specialize in defending drunk drivers and barroom brawlers are attempting unsuccessfully to suppress giggles...

WASHINGTON: In the Lewinsky case, being called in by Judge Norma Holloway Johnson is the nearest thing to taking a trip to the principal's office. Johnson was working overtime Monday night, hauling Starr prosecutors, White House counsels and the latest batch of Lewinsky lawyers into her chambers for a stern lecture on why they shouldn't talk to strange reporters. The reason for the reprimand: Growing controversy over Ken Starr's interview with Brill's Content magazine cofounder Steve Brill, in which Starr admitted leaking sensitive information to selected journalists. The Justice Department now says it's "examining" Brill...

...before the grand jury last week--could have plenty to fear. Indicting a bigger fish than Lewinsky could make it much easier for Starr to force Clinton out of hiding. Lindsey's predicament last week was particularly bad: Starr wants to question him on 19 topics, and Judge Norma Holloway Johnson has agreed. Persuading her to side with Starr against Clinton's assertion of Executive privilege was no easy job. Starr could not just argue that Lindsey had been around when all the key decisions were made and therefore might know something; he had to present concrete evidence of some...

They're sworn to protect the President; now Janet Reno is set to step into the ring to protect them from testifying. The Secret Service got a boost late Monday when the Justice Department filed a brief notice of intent to appeal last month's ruling from Judge Norma Holloway Johnson, which compelled Secret Service agents to testify in Ken Starr's Lewinsky probe. While that doesn't guarantee a DOJ appeal, it does leave the door open for Reno to challenge her own independent counsel in the courts...

WASHINGTON: Bill won't talk, but Bruce and Sidney must. That's the latest from the battle over executive privilege in the Lewinsky case. Judge Norma Holloway Johnson declared Clinton aides Bruce Lindsey and Sidney Blumenthal are required to spill the beans on chats with their boss about the former White House intern. "If there were instructions from the President to obstruct justice or efforts to suborn perjury," Johnson wrote, "such actions likely took the form of conversations involving the President's closest advisers." Flush with that success, Ken Starr is doing an end-run round a Clinton appeal...
