...crushed. My responsive chord, as I have termed it was merely a fuzzy recollection of the movie "Animal House," and these freshmen, these chosen few, the best and the brightest the country has to offer, seemed quite impressed with this Hollywood portrayal of college life. In fact, most of these guys were so well nurtured on T V that they idolized, and even impersonated, many of the celluloid heroes. Starsky and Hutch and, of course. Clint Eastwood seem to be quite popular with the class of '82. But don't jump to conclusions. Not all the freshmen emulate these macho...

Carlin harbors no intentions of decaying, of joining the Show Biz Kids in Hollywood by the swimming pool and the shapely bods. The wiry Irish class clown and streetcorner toker from White Harlem still enjoys visiting his mother in the old neighborhood, and seems to gain perspective on his life as he ages. Soon his funny beard will turn gray--and age and eternity aside, it is painful to imagine that Goerge Carlin will become a prisoner of his own words...

...surprising about this rambunctious autobiography, however, is that although Gann tells a number of good wing-and-prayer yarns, some of his most surprising adventures have had nothing to do with aviation. He has been a newsreel cameraman, soldier, Broadway actor, polo player, farmer, cartoonist, commercial fisherman, deepwater yachtsman, Hollywood talent scout and, of course, a bestselling novelist (The High and the Mighty, Band of Brothers). He wrote, directed and sold a movie while still in high school, talked his way into the Yale Drama School without bothering with the usual formality of attending college, worked for a while...

...Even Hollywood would probably turn down so implausible a plot: a little Swedish girl emigrates to the U.S. with Mommy and Daddy and goes to Radio City Music Hall on her very first night in America. That evening convinces her that she wants to be an entertainer when she grows up. She succeeds and eventually plays the role of a Rockette in a big, splashy TV show about Radio City. Which just happens to be the real-life story of Ann-Margret, who appears with Beverly Sills and Diahann Carroll in NBC's Dec. 14 special, Rockette: A Holiday...

...much to admire in Director Nikita Mikhalkov's rendering of this tale. He has shot the movie in summery, impressionistic colors that well evoke the end of imperial Russia. His comic vignettes about the early days of his country's film industry are reminiscent of old-time Hollywood lore, right down to the portrayal of temperamental screenwriters and cost-conscious producers. Slave even has a character who is a Russian equivalent of American Silent-Era Star John Gilbert: a dashing leading man whose speaking voice is disconcertingly high-pitched...
