...disappeared. Gillette is unveiling the Mach3, the three-bladed wonder these three engineers had often glimpsed but never captured. Giddy for men of their age and earnestness, they exhibit their high-tech gizmo in a small, unadorned office in a brick, Industrial Age building in South Boston topped with Hollywood-style letters spelling out WORLD SHAVING HEADQUARTERS. John Terry, the elderly, thick-glassed British engineer whose team came up with the design for the successor to the twin-track Sensor, cradles the prototype between his thumb and forefinger as if it were a Honus Wagner. Terry, who has two degrees...

...These Hollywood-style celebrations seem meaningless even to East Coast Jews, so it's no wonder Israelis found them difficult to stomach. More than a celebration, they seem to be a cultural imposition of American ideals--of celebrity and ostentatiousness--upon the rough-hewn world of the sabra (native Israeli). ...Leonardo DiCaprio is a U.N. election monitor with Minnie Driver as a Bosnian widow... Don't laugh -- Kofi Annan was taking meetings in Hollywood today, pitching ideas and trying to enlist the movie industry's support in improving America's understanding of the U.N. Besides seeking star power to back U.N. initiatives, Annan also wants to get producers interested in making a movie about U.N. workers in the world's trouble spots. Like the Dalai Lama, Annan has sensed that the battle for Washington may be won or lost in Tinseltown. "To get the kind of support it needs...

...lies when he must and damns the consequences. He's crafty, and has consistently outwitted a hostile Congress by appearing to give it what it wants. He is charismatic and feckless, and women (apparently) adore him. In the multiplex theater that has become the U.S., the virtual reality is Hollywood, not Washington. We want a touch of strife and then a happy ending. JAMES E. HASHIM Jacksonville...
