Snyder's expenses are not unusual. John Schureman, 21, of Hollywood, developed peritonitis when his infected appendix ruptured, and then needed a second operation when the infection spread to other parts of his body. His condition, complicated by a peritoneal hernia, worsened to the point that he required three more operations, 15 pints of blood that cost $15 each, and round-the-clock care. Schureman spent nearly two months in various hospitals. His bills, which came to more than $20,000, wiped out his $3,000 savings.
