This theme of domestic neurosis is itself safe, familiar ground for Tyler, whose bestselling Dinner At The Homesick Restaurant portrays with warm, humorous insight, the mixed blessings of family life and its traditional values. The characters in her latest novel bear a strong resemblance to those of the earlier work in terms of their ambivalence toward home. Tyler's sympathies highlight, in particular, the eccentric habits of white middle America: middle-class, middle-aged individuals suspended between "Tips From the Beauty Stars" security measures and childish rebellion. When the glib young Julian, Macon's editor, sails into Macon's sister...
Readers of Anne Tyler novels have come to expect eccentric homebodies (Morgan Gower of Morgan's Passing, Ezra Tull of Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant), but none combined oddities as well as Macon Leary. His occupation, for example, is matchless. Would you believe a travel writer for people who hate to travel? His guidebooks, published under the general heading "The Accidental Tourist," answer such questions as "What restaurants in Tokyo offered Sweet'n'Low? Did Amsterdam have a McDonald's? Did Mexico City have a Taco Bell? Did any place in Rome serve Chef Boyardee ravioli?" Like his unadventurous readers...
Here, away from home. "Everyone is homesick," says Ecuadorian Howard Saltos, who owns the Discosymas record store in Jackson Heights. He has a separate section for the music of each Latin American country. Folk ballads are the best sellers. "They like to reminisce a lot," explains Saltos of his customers. Peruvian Hayly Rivera, now a naturalized American, is scornful of the "ghetto mentality" of many of her fellow Hispanics. "Their heart is back home. I hear too many people around here saying 'I don't like this, I don't like that.' " Rivera hears them complaining in Spanish, which riles...
...away. He lasted 24 days. A common and logical assumption is that he was terrorized by the undisciplined disciplinarian Bobby Knight, a coach who orders haircuts while throwing furniture. In fact, it was a roommate's brimming closet wardrobe that daunted Bird, an embarrassment of clothing. "I was a homesick kid who was lost and broke," he says. "If I knew then what I know now, I'd have run right back. Coach Knight and me wouldn't have had no trouble. He'd have loved my game...
...course, the messy dish they call "tacos" does not compare with your kielbasa, but I can't believe that is why some of the girls got sick and had to go to the hospital. And I must admit that poor Miss Sri Lanka left early; she was so homesick. I missed Poland too, but oh how I wish you could have seen the wonderfully decadent Western luxuries bestowed on the new Miss Universe, a sweet 21-year-old nurse from Sweden named Yvonne Ryding. She started with breakfast in bed and will soon get all new clothes...
