Against all odds, logic, or reason, the answer is yes. Devo is that near-extinct animal, the rock band with a message. Its name doesn't come, as you might expect, from "deviant"--Devo draws its identity from a theory called "De-evolution," the idea that homo sapiens is on its way back down that ol' Darwinian scale. As a result, the band's songs tend to be about mental deviants, physiological functions, and the detritus of modern American life...

...sure that she is Emilia Bassano Lanier, the half-Venetian wife of a court musician and "a bad lot." As for those who find evidence of homosexuality in the canon, Rowse dismisses them as "silly buggers. The idiots can't see that Christopher Marlowe was a roaring homo, and Francis Bacon was a homo, but that Shakespeare was more than normally heterosexual-for an Englishman." Such fulminations have provoked assaults by critics, who find the challenger "impudent," "self-advertising" and full of "melodramatic fantasies." Rowse counters in iambic pentameter, by cursing "the blinkered outlook of academics." His most persuasive...

According to Leakey, the Australopithecus branch and the evolutionary branch leading to man diverged several milion years ago, with the Australopithecus dying out, leaving man without phylogenetic cousins. Leakey replaces the older theory by offering another line of descent: from Ramipithecus to Homo habilis to Homo erectus to Homo sapiens. This revision is significant because it creates the puzzle of the extinction of our Australopithecus cousins, and pushes back the time of man's origin much further than previously imagined, to perhaps 500.000 years...

...middle of the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, the island of Mauritius took several million years to develop animal forms that exist nowhere else in the world. But what nature can accomplish in eons, humanity can undo in millenniums, and that is exactly what the species Homo sapiens has done on Mauritius. By his own actions-and those of the animals he has introduced-man has already done away away the flightless black parrot, the giant Mauritian tortoise and the dodo, the huge bird whose very name has become synonymous with extinction. Now civilization threatens the rest of this island...

...team unearthed the nearly complete skull of a creature called Homo habilis, a proto-man who flourished some 2 million years ago. The skull, labeled "1470" for its Kenya National Museum catalogue number, gave science a new idea of early man's appearance. People of the Lake provides some fresh ideas about how he lived. The book, written in collaboration with Roger Lewin of the British journal New Scientist, also offers some encouraging speculations on why hominids became humans...
