Asian stock markets posted sharp gains Sept. 19 as investors grew more confident that stepped-up government efforts to contain the damage caused by the U.S. credit crunch would be effective. Japan's benchmark Nikkei index was up 3.8%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng 9.6% and the Shanghai stock index shot up 9.5%, recovering some of the steep losses suffered earlier in the week...

On Sep. 18, Hong Kong's government ordered a recall of all products made by Yili, one of China's largest dairy producers, after melamine was found in nine of the company's products. There have been no reports of any sickness among Hong Kong babies caused by those products. But the local Center for Food Safety said only two glasses of the tainted Yili milk per day could be enough to cause health problems in young children...
