Many Harvard students who object to the "honoring" of Charles Engelhard (a true honor does not require a donation) also want Harvard to sell immediately and totally any stock held in banks or companies that do business with South Africa. They also want the U.S. companies in South Africa to leave. There are questions that need to be asked about the possible consequences of these positions...

While few undergraduates now use the library, it is crucial that they express their distaste for the school's decision to accept a gift from the Charles W. Engelhard Foundation and then honor Engelhard by naming its library after him. Because Engelhard made his fortune by exploiting the labor of South African blacks in gold mines, it seems inappropriate that a library in a school training future public servants should bear his name--especially when the school itself is named after a president...
Should the University honor such a man by dedicating a library of public affairs to him? (Harvard administrators insist that they will accept any gifts as long as there are "no strings attached.") Dean Allison, when pressed by the Kennedy School Black Students Caucus, admitted that there is in fact no contract requiring the naming of the library after Engelhard. If so, why not change the name? Is the Kennedy School frankly admitting that there should be no relationship between morality and public affairs? Must we seek funds from and honor every wealthy donor, no matter how immoral their source...
