...really the violence that scares parents--they've lived with and tolerated intimations of horror for generations. In Grimm's fairy tales, what does the wolf do to Red Riding Hood's granny or the witch plan to do to Hansel? When kids collect dinosaurs, parents, blinded by science, simply shrug when their children yell in the museum, "Look, mom, that allosaurus is eating the brachiosaur's baby!" ...game. After a slow start, the Homies & Popz rally. "That's what I'm talking about!" Hayes cheers after a good play. "Sport of kings! Thinking man's game!" Steve Castaneda, 18, bowls four wickets--"He practices in his backyard with lemons," Haber says--as the chaps from the 'hood sink the Mayflower, 121-84. And the chorus of their celebratory rap goes like this...

...dozen college chums reune to reminisce, bicker and bond. This agitated comedy (produced by Lee's cousin Spike) could be called The Big Chillin' if it had a smidge of the 1983 film's wit and charm. It's nice to see an African-American story set outside the 'hood, and we'll keep calling hunky Taye Diggs a star of the future until he's 60. But he'll have to be in movies better than The Best...
