Perched on the hood of a police car and surrounded by ten club-swinging bodyguards, the bouffant-haired Black Power fanatic harangued a crowd of more than 1,000 with his customary oxymoronic oratory, advising his listeners that the U.S. has 13 concentration camps where it plans to put Negroes and that "America gave us a black astronaut just so's they could lose that nigger in space." Then came the familiar peroration: "Stop singing and start swinging, chump. Get a gun." As the crowd broke up, a Negro girl skipped down the street happily chanting...
...ends. In the meantime, Ford is offering a tempting array of old favorites and one entirely new series. For Ford's Mustang, which has triggered hot competition in the sporty-specialty-car field (see following story), the changes for 1968 are modest: one makes air scoops on the hood standard instead of optional. The '68 Thunderbird is also virtually unchanged except for the substitution of a three-person front seat for two bucket seats...
...Spoiler. Ford's new series, called the Torino, is an effort to cash in on Detroit's growing emphasis on sporty styling and intermediate size. Marketed with the Fairlane line, the Torino features the elongated hood and abbreviated rear end that has caught on in the specialty cars; it comes in hardtop, sedan and station wagon, as well as a racier "GT" model equipped with a 210-h.p. V-8 (engines with up to 390 h.p. are optional). The standard Fair-lanes have also been streamlined, their bodies stretched out by a full...
...prize money on the Grand National circuit. and 65,000 were on hand for last week's Southern 500. The cars they saw whipping through Darlington's straightaways at speeds up to 155 m.p.h. were anything but stock. Hidden under the electric-blue hood of Petty's Plymouth Belvedere GTX was a 426-cu.-in. "hemi-head" racing engine that generated 520 h.p. and burned gasoline at the rate of a gallon every three miles. The car's exhaust system, brakes, ignition and suspension had all been rebuilt at the Petty garage in Level Cross...
...Caps & Waste Gates. There are many new cosmetic touches. Dodge's Charger has fake air vents on both hood and front doors, which the company calls "simulated waste gates." The Charger also has a large chrome gas cap protruding from the rear bumper-an effect inspired by racing cars and called a "quick fill gas cap." The Pontiac Tempest GTO has a rubberized front bumper that resists dents to about 3 m.p.h. impact-which would not do the average driver much good. And the new Plymouth station wagon has a "squeegee washer/wiper," which cleans the rear window when...
