...doublehanded squads were also in action last weekend, as the Harvard squad competed in the Hood Trophy race at Tufts. The Crimson finished 14th overall, partially because the singlehanded competitors had to take it easy, due to their upcoming qualifying races...
Still, in the Toyota tradition, the tC offers terrific value in a low-key package. For a base price of $16,465, it comes with a sport-tuned suspension, antilock disc brakes, 17-in. alloy wheels and a chrome-tipped exhaust. Under the hood, there's a 160-h.p. four-cylinder engine. I didn't expect pulse-pumping pickup and didn't get it. But the five-speed manual I drove shifted smoothly in L.A. traffic. The steering was responsive, the ride firm, and during the brief spells in which I clocked more than 10 m.p.h. on the clogged freeway...
Just now, grown-up horror is frightfully chic. The Village, which Shyamalan describes as "a Grimm fairy tale--Little Red Riding Hood, but an adult, dark version of it," creeps into theaters this week, followed by Open Water. Hood staunchly denies that politics is at play, but her critics point out that almost a third of those listed reside in the heavily Democratic South Florida...
...chads may hit the fan this week when Florida's 67 county elections supervisors meet in Key West and debate how to handle Hood's purge list of 47,000. Confirming the list's accuracy is now their responsibility, and some elections supervisors are eager to avoid a replay of 2000. "We already found one person [on the list] whose [criminal] charges had later been reduced to a misdemeanor," says a G.O.P. supervisor. Given what happened in 2000, he adds, "I'm going to err on the side of the voter this time...
