...exuberant gesture and radiant color, American art in the 1940s was already betraying a moody melancholy lurking beneath the aggressive romanticism. Ar shile Gorky's disembodied forms, drifting poignantly amid the lyric whisperings of nature, have a kind of indescribable horror, like cancer in a beautiful girl. Edward Hopper's Gas is everybody's home town - and it is stifling with loneliness...

EASY RIDER. A major movie on an old theme-youth searching for where it's at. The props are familiar-drugs and motorcycles-but Director Dennis Hopper (who also co-stars with Peter Fonda) puts starch in what has become worn material. A brilliant performance by Newcomer Jack Nicholson, plus the use of hard-core Americans playing themselves, makes the youths' odyssey Homeric indeed...

...Emilio Pucci is not a Renaissance man, he is doing one of the best imitations around. A Florentine marchese with a pedigree dating to Donatello, the designer, artist, sportsman, politician and resort-hopper has etched his name into the fashion lexicon of the decade. With the opening of a one-man show of silkscreens, tapestry rugs and sculptures in New York last week, Pucci, at 54, seems about to do for walls and floors what he has done for fashionable women on five continents-swathe them in splinters and swirls of color...

Also unlike Rider, Restaurant is incredibly close to earth. Grass is smoked, girls are screwed, and motorcycles are raced, but Penn and his wonderful film editor. Dede Allen, do not point at these things as Dennis Hopper does in the Peter Fonda epic. Nor do we get the glamorized, generalized "real-life" performances of Rider in this picture. Arlo is a natural, uneasy, stuttering Arlo-not a hippie-stud (like Fonda) or a hippie-hippie (like Hopper...

...Hopper's frankly commercial use of rock gives us one more insight into his real sensibility. Easy Rider may be a happy vision, but it's a bourgeois happy vision, concocted with both eyes on the market place. Just listen to how Hopper treated sex, and why: "I knew that Peter and I and the girls we meet would never be seen totally nude in the nude swimming scene, because I wanted to show the over-forty crowd that it is possible to play like innocent children in the nude without getting into sex." In the echo chamber...
