Cool as Ice does serve as an excellent example of the triumph of hip-hop urban cool over middle America. It is an old story: the street kid on the bike with bad grammar is the coolest thing there is. The small-town girls fall for him, and the small-town boys idolize him and imitate his haircut. And not only does he vanquish their Seventies rock with his rap, he also captures the crooks when the WASPs fail...

From a storytelling point of view, it was better when all the bad guys were in the Kremlin and the good guys in the Pentagon. Transitions between the two camps were a snap. Now, Clancy has to hop back and forth between so many far- flung conspirators that it is often impossible to tell where a scene is occurring and who is talking (an old problem for Clancy, since all his characters sound exactly the same). Presumably, hundreds of thousands of readers will wade through this interminable novel to find out if Jack Ryan can once again save the world...
This makes for some interesting distinctions in the group's audience. Timothy White, editor of Billboard, thinks N.W.A.'s attraction for white male teens is "danger at a safe distance." Jon Shecter, the Harvard-educated editor of The Source, a monthly journal of hip-hop culture, points out that although "it's a cool status symbol among white kids to like and identify with N.W.A., most of the black community doesn't like them. There's a lot of positive, intelligent rap out there, and N.W.A. is negative to the extreme...
