...wanted to share a story that may be a true story, about an Air Force captain who narrowly escaped serious injury recently - this is from a newspaper clip that I found this morning - when he decided to try horseback riding, even though he had never had any lessons or any prior experience. So he mounted the horse unassisted, and the horse immediately sprang into action. As it galloped along at a steady and rhythmic pace, the captain began to slip from the saddle. ...self-taught 20th-century artist Martin Ramirez - who produced the bulk of his work while he was a mental patient at the DeWitt State Hospital in Auburn, Calif. - New York City's American Folk Art Museum is now showing 25 newly discovered Ramirez works. These drawings and collages, of horseback riders, trains, landscapes, Madonnas and animals, were done in Ramirez's last years, 1960-63, and collected by a doctor who provided the artist with art supplies. ...That brings me to my second point. There are considerable difficulties in understanding it because of two false images, which are widespread. On the one hand we have the image of Muslims as barbarians, the traditional image of a Saracen riding out of the desert on horseback with a sword in one hand and a Koran in the other offering their victims a choice between the two. On the other hand we have Islam as a religion of love and peace, like the Quakers but without their aggressiveness. Both of these are, of course, nonsense. Both are wildly exaggerated...
