...upset by the Democratic nominee's failure to punch back that he flew from Little Rock to Boston to tutor Dukakis staff members on the wisdom and methods of rapid response. But no one listened until it was too late; Dukakis thought the ads about furloughed killer Willie Horton did not need to be answered simply because they were stupid and wrong, ignoring the fact that they were devastating. By the time he ran in 1992, Clinton had learned that brazen replies were key to political success. The War Room operation in Little Rock, set up after the Democratic Convention...

...watch for another change in the weather if the President's testimony in the Little Rock Whitewater trial falls into enemy hands. It was videotaped over the weekend at the White House, with all presidential atmospherics forbidden. Floyd Brown, author of George Bush's infamous Willie Horton ads, is salivating; he is threatening to sue to get the footage. Only a perp walk and an orange jumpsuit could excite Republicans more...

They are scapegoating criminals, people of color, immigrants, welfare recipients, etc. for the failures of the old capitalist economic system. It is a tactic as old as recorded history and is known as "divide and conquer" or "divide and rule." The amazing thing is that people never catch on. It works every time...

...presidential election, when rising crime was an issue, Willie Horton became the wanted-poster child who helped elect George Bush. In 1992 Bill Clinton neutralized the Republican advantage by positioning himself as a tough-on-crime Democrat who favored the death penalty and would put 100,000 new police officers on the streets. In an interview with Time, Clinton said last week that the country has embarked on a historic change: "What's happening now across America essentially closes the door on an era that began with the murder of Kitty Genovese 30 years ago." In that milestone episode...
