Died. Brigadier General Sir William Horwood, 75, onetime chief of Scotland Yard (1920-28). World War I Provost Marshal of the British Expeditionary Force in France; after a brief illness; in West Mersea, England. Grey-mustached Sir William's principles were as high as his bowler, his methods sometimes as narrow as his collar. He did not like the idea of female bobbies. In 1922 he cunningly waved away poisoned éclairs sent to him by mail, soon afterwards mistook some arsenious chocolate creams for an expected gift.
