...melodramas; they instructed a new generation of old-film fans in the urban snarl, panache and breathless efficiency of the young James Cagney, Barbara Stanwyck and Bette Davis, plus a bunch of directors that scholars had mostly ignored. But TNT was clogged with commercials, sometimes 15-20 mins. an hour. In time, the oldies format gave way to basketball and reruns of '70s TV shows. The FOOFs were disconsolate... and ecstatic when free TCM premiered Apr. 14, 1994 (again with Gone with the Wind). The same library would be ransacked, but the new channel was free of commercials, more smartly...
...Private Screenings. Since the early days, Osborne has sat down with venerable actors (and a few directors) for a clips-heavy discussion of their lives and work; the conversations usually run a little under an hour. It's a treat, and occasionally poignant, to see stars who've been out of the klieg lights for decades sit for one last closeup. Don't miss the Betty Hutton interview: she erupts into laughter and tears with exactly the gale force she exuded in her '40s comedies...
...failure, though not the central one, of Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, which opened yesterday to largely libelous reviews, that the star stays dressed for nearly the first hour. In this update of A Christmas Carol (drably directed by Mean Girls' Mark Waters, written by the guys who did last winter's insufferable holiday comedy Four Christmases), McConaughey plays Connor Mead, a glamour photographer with an eye for philandering. After breaking up with three girls "in bulk," over a video conference call, he goes to his brother's wedding weekend, re-wounding his old inamorata (Jennifer Garner) while causing about...
...Berea, which was founded in 1855 as the first integrated college in the South, all 1,530 students work at least 10 hours a week in a campus or service job, earning $3.80 an hour and four years of free tuition. Eighty percent of the school's operating costs are funded by its endowment and the rest comes from donations, a tough combination these days: the school announced on Friday that it would lay off 30 employees, or 5% of the staff. Berea did not, however, back off from its commitment to offering a free education, and this year...
...None of this is to suggest that things could be considered safe or normal in Baghdad, where at least 150 people died in a series of bomb attacks over a 24-hour period just last week. None of the world's most violent cities see carnage like that on a regular basis. And it is safe to assume that virtually no one living in Baghdad feels lucky when considering the situation in Caracas or Cape Town. Many Iraqis still point to the years before the U.S. invasion, when Baghdad had a reputation for some of the safest streets...
