Essentially scavengers, the dealers-who supply 9,000 surplus stores from coast to coast-hover around military stockpiles and private industry warehouses, buying up obsolete and overstocked goods at a fraction (5-7%) of cost. There is plenty to go around-and not just leftovers from the last war. The Government alone last year unloaded $2.1 billion worth of "usable property." Under a house-cleaning policy recommended in 1955 by the Hoover Commission, it plans to scrap even more in the years to come. The supply seems inexhaustible; the military services often buy too much or find a product obsolete...
Even for sophisticated missile watchers, the men who have marked the flight of so many of Cape Canaveral's great fire-breathing birds, last week's show was a dazzling spectacle. The blast-off was swift and sure; there was none of that heart-stopping hover of other tests when liquid-fueled monsters seemed to balance in uncertain equilibrium before they picked up the momentum of flight. This time the gleaming, 58-ft. cylinder shot straight up into the sky ahead of its lengthening tail. Three seconds after launch, its guidance system took over, turned it into...
...feeding them heavy doses of Spike Jones recordings over loudspeakers. As a result, by Inauguration Day the horses were immune to noise, but the cops were nervous wrecks. Parade officials put on a small-scale dry run down Pennsylvania Avenue, pronounced everything satisfactory. They arranged for a helicopter to hover over the parade and radio traffic information to an Army-run command post. There, in a van off Pennsylvania Avenue, a control center was fitted out with radio-telephone connections to a swarm of roving observers. Closed-circuit TV cameras focused on possible bottlenecks, relayed their pictures...
...Doubleday; $22.50), may become a classic of natural history. Author Greenewalt, president of mighty E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., has written a monograph, understandable to laymen, on his hobby-hummingbirds. Greenewalt offers some intriguing hummingbird lore, including the fact that they are the only birds that can hover with body motionless, and the only ones that have a " 'reverse gear' which enables them to fly backwards as prettily and efficiently as they can forwards." What will most excite bird watchers as well as plain readers is the crisp, full-color photographs, the largest collection ever published...
...characters who don't make much sense--Pabst's brilliant direction makes the movie coherent and powerful. The actors seem inescapably trapped by their surroundings. They are often seen, especially at important moments, behind paneled windows or rows of shelves or actual prison bars, and the buildings seem to hover over and enclose them. In one of the most brilliant scenes, when Queen Victoria is confronted by hordes of screaming beggars, she stares, horrified and uncomprehendingly at them, and then raises her bouquet of roses to her face to cut off the sight of them...
