In the script's soap-opera view of life, sexual passion and jealousy drive even political revolutions. And there are echoes of the worst musical of the 1980s, the Shroud of Turin howler Into the Light, in the finale: red-and-gold-robed chorines try to explain the Asian religious concept of karma in lines seemingly lifted from a Southern California bumper sticker ("Karma is the way you never die"). One leaves the theater wondering if those Shinto priests read the script...

...Insiders uses a rock score to enliven the weekly adventures of a hip free-lance reporter and his partner who go undercover for stories. The apparent model, again, is Miami Vice, but the show looks more like an '85 version of The Mod Squad. The season's biggest howler is Hollywood Beat, another Miami Vice-influenced show about a pair of undercover cops who patrol seedy Hollywood Boulevard. Creator Aaron Spelling's vision of Hollywood's "raw underbelly" features a ludicrous gallery of street folk (good-hearted prostitutes, a "cute" bag lady and a caped wacko called Captain Crusader...

Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan just might salvage what remained of the jungle lord's reputation after John and Bo Derek turned Tarzan into a howler in 1981. This time out, when Tarzan, played by Newcomer Christopher Lambert, 25, discovers that he is the Earl of Greystoke, he doffs his loincloth and hightails it to England. When his adoptive dad Silverbeard also turns up ... Oh heck, Tarzan is a howler no matter how you cut it. At least this version puts him in some decent clothes...
