...Vassily Aksyonov was part of a restless generation of writers chafing at centuries of censorship and inspired by the irreverent styles of the West. The Burn, a novel written in the early '70s and first published in the U.S. after the author's arrival, is his best-known satirical howl against Soviet oppression and conformity. Aksyonov has published other books in exile, but now, after a decade of personal and artistic freedom, he has written one for the American market. Generations of Winter (Random House; 592 pages; $25) will probably draw comparisons to War and Peace and Dr. Zhivago...

...with a couple of friends and some beer and watch the U.S. play; it was strictly recreational stuff. Then both games on a given afternoon, even the ones that were broadcast in Spanish on Univision. I rationalized that I was just tuning in to hear Andres Cantor's famous howl of "Gooooooool!" I didn't have a problem. I could have turned off the set anytime I wanted...

...languishing. And any farewell to this place has to be found outside of the "senior events" the University recycles year for our final enjoyment. I might have guessed from finals period that the end of the year would prove an insufficient capstone. Presently enough, this year's Quad Howl was a travesty. Since sophomore year bonfires and spontaneous tackle football have been standards during the primal yell. But they were in pitifully short supply this time around...

...travelers could start to howl if airlines make further cutbacks in their frequent-flyer programs, which some industry watchers see as likely. Reason: Southwest and such aggressive discounters as Continental are forcing larger rivals to cut ticket prices on their short-haul routes, which have been one of the few profitable sources of airline revenue. Such reductions are coming on top of the seasonal fare war that Northwest kicked off in April when it lowered ticket prices to Hawaii by 40%. To help recoup the income, major carriers could be easily tempted to cut or discontinue frequent-flyer miles...

This is not music for the squeamish -- or even the optimistic. Meshing the angry nihilism of punk and heavy metal with the synthetic sheen of techno, The Downward Spiral is a 14-song, 65-minute howl of somebody falling into the void. What keeps it from being just another nauseating exercise in shock rock is the intelligence and creative force behind its dire sound. On March of the Pigs, for example, layers of shifting static are suddenly broken by a lyrical piano riff that blooms like a flower through cracked pavement before the wall of noise crushes it again...
