...specialist in the private life of Adolf Hitler is the lurid daily Paris-Soir, which last month published details of the Führer's supposed romance with the old-time cinemactress, Pola Negri (TIME, April 26). This week Paris-Soir was at it again, this time with a still more lurid story of what has become of Pola Negri's reputed predecessor, muscular, mountain-climbing Leni Riefenstahl. During the Olympic Games last year Cinemactress Riefenstahl had complete charge of all official newsreel pictures, was expected to make at least one full-length film. 20 short features...
Still uncut and unedited last week was what Nazi authorities long ago announced as the exclusive, official film of the Olympic Games, produced under the direction of beauteous Leni Riefenstahl, good friend of the Führer. In the belief that Cinemactress Negri (real name: Appollonia Chalupec) was a Polish Jewess, Minister Goebbels refused her permission to act in Germany. Suddenly this order was overruled by the Führer himself. "Investigation," read the official communiqué, "instituted by the Reichsführer has established that Pola Negri is Polish and therefore Aryan" (TIME, Feb. 11, 1935). Pink with pleasure, Actress Negri cried: "The whole world knows that I am a Catholic. . . . Der Führer must be a brilliant...
...Actress Negri had admitted to her mother that she was having an affair with someone in Germany, and added, "I can say no more than that he is a very very famous person." In Berlin she had been seen several times at informal parties squired by the Führer...
