Many members of Congress were furious last year when former HUD Secretary Samuel Pierce stonewalled his way through hearings on influence peddling and favoritism at his agency. Last week, bowing to Democratic pressure, Attorney General Dick Thornburgh recommended the appointment of an independent counsel to investigate Pierce's role in awarding millions of dollars in contracts to associates of top Republicans. ...house near me worth a minimum of $65,000 was recently offered for sale by HUD for $50,000 (mistake No. 1). I bid $58,100, but lost it to a bid of $54,000 because the Government decided to accept the lower offer even before the bids were opened (mistake No. 2). One bumbled sale a real estate depression does not make. But if it's happening in my neighborhood, you have to wonder whether it won't be happening in others as well...

Related to the issue of national strength is the issue of international purpose. How active is our friendship for liberty supposed to be? HUD Secretary Jack Kemp sometimes gives the impression that if he were ever to become President, he would show up with megaphone and pompons wherever in the world there was a pro-democracy rally. Such enthusiasm strikes most conservatives as suspicious -- liberal, even. If we expect the world to mind its own business, we should mind ours...
