...York politicians have rarely been accused of promoting a rational discussion of important issues and critical choices, and this year's candidates for the governorship haven't surprised anyone on that score. True to form, incumbent Gov. Hugh L. Carey and Republican challenger Perry B. Duryea, minority leader of the state assembly, have managed to reduce the decision on who is to run a state of 16 million people, whose cities tread regularly on the edge of bankruptcy and whose social service agencies are crumbling from dry rot and sheer neglect, into a banal game of phony partisan issues...

...Hugh Sidey's article, "In Jerry's Crystal Ball" [Oct. 16], has to be a tongue-in-cheek story about Jerry Ford. How could he possibly reminisce about what he would have done if he had been given an other four years? He had more time in the presidency than Carter has had, yet what we got from former President Ford was swine flu shots with paralyzing after effects and WIN buttons...

Alarmed that the Egyptian decision could bring the negotiations to a halt, President Carter reached Sadat that evening. Next morning, Carter related at a campaign rally for New York Governor Hugh Carey, Sadat sent word that he would let the negotiators stay in Washington. Carter acknowledged that there had been "trouble in recent hours" over the Israeli settlement issue. But once again the President had skillfully stepped in at a crucial moment and saved the talks...
