...collusion of tongues found aboard the Ibis, a 19th century schooner plying the Indian Ocean. Its crew speaks a babble of English, Portuguese, Hindustani, Malay, Tamil, Chinese - and yet, through "the alchemy of the open water," as Ghosh writes, they communicate sufficiently well to sail this great wooden hulk. Language animates the Ibis, as well it should: loaded with migrants, opium and the dreams of unwitting pioneers, it is intended to be the vessel for a whole trilogy of novels. Sea of Poppies is the impressive first installment...

...more bang for the buck but a higher movie intelligence than a lot of the highly praised indie films. The techies are the auteurs now, and they can make the most fantastic creature look and feel real. Well, Rourke here is his own special effect monster, his own Incredible Hulk. (It's the rare movie where the closing credits for Makeup and Mr. Rourke's Trainer are well deserved.) Reviewers love watching actors abuse their bodies for their art almost as much as actors love doing it. That's one reason Mickey should be a guest of honor...

Behind the bulk of his hulk, a man's dogged decency is on display, and so, briefly, is Rourke's fallen-angel smile. ...better while nearly every other genre has gone fallow and flaccid? I'm no special fan of cine-mayhem, but I'm buoyed by the craft and verve of recent entertainments like Iron Man, Speed Racer, Wanted, Hellboy and The Dark Knight. Even so-so entries like The Incredible Hulk and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Billionaire Sexagenarians Trying to Recapture the Glories of Their Middle Years interrupt their meandering with set pieces that are figuratively or literally dynamite - like an old Astaire-Rogers movie that comes to soaring life when the couple starts dancing...

...Comics franchise, will hit theaters with all the hoopla and fanboy avidity of the summer season's earlier movies based on comic books. It's the fifth, and three of the first four (Iron Man, Wanted and Hellboy II) have been terrific or just short of it. (The Incredible Hulk: not so hot.) It's been one of the best summers in memory for flat-out blockbuster entertainment, and in the wow category, the Nolan film doesn't disappoint. True to format, it has a crusading hero, a sneering villain in Heath Ledger's Joker, spectacular chases - including one with...
