...humid morning in Brisbane three days later, Latham embraced his mentor and Medicare's founder, former Labor Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, before unveiling the party's trump card, Medicare Gold, a massive extension of Medicare to give free hospital care to people over 75. Adding extra childcare support and pension reform to his growing list of sweeteners, it was one of Latham's high points, and his audience left bolstered - "I feel proud to be a Labor supporter again," said teacher Robin Boyne. Latham's other key message that day was simple: "I'm ready to lead...
...near the exit, I turn to watch the semi-celebrities down their last cocktails, finish munching on cookies, and trickle out into the humid Manhattan summer night. The premiere wasn’t quite the glamorous gathering I’d been expecting, but gallivanting with the jet set is fun while it lasts...

Sometimes it's both the heat and the humidity. According to a study in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, weather can affect the success of LASIK surgery, used to correct poor eyesight in a million American patients a year. Dr. Keith Walter at Wake Forest University reports that the hotter and more humid it is when doctors perform the operation, the more likely patients are to come back for follow-up procedures. High humidity can apparently cause the cornea to swell, affecting the surgeon's accuracy. --By Sora Song
