...Torso, the artist paraphrases anatomy down to a mere presence, where its force is greater than in a slickly limned nude. In The Fountain, he portrays humid decay draping blunt forms that seem relics of a distant past. There is always agony in Sutherland's garden-or at least, as his biographer, Douglas Cooper, dryly admits, "little evidence ofgaiety...

Early last week a handful of junior army and police officers crept into the white, bougainvillea-shrouded presidential mansion overlooking Libreville's humid harbor. The sleeping President was hauled from his bed with a revolver in his side, then found himself quickly spirited off to the Baraka military camp outside the capital. When Libreville awoke, the rebels had control of the airport, post office, radio station and government buildings. The coup committee announced that "Léon Mba and his acolytes" had been thrown out, named Aubame provisional Prime Minister, and looting got under...

The first mutiny erupted in Tanganyika's capital of Dar es Salaam, and gunfire rattled through that humid "Haven of Peace" for the first time since German gunboats held target practice there during World War I, when Tanganyika was part of German East Africa. Before it died away, at least 20 Tanganyikans were dead, whole blocks of the Arab and Indian quarters lay in ruins, and President Julius Nyerere's government-once considered East Africa's most stable-had been seriously discountenanced. So far the biggest of these colonies is in Campeche state, an almost virgin territory of well-watered savanna and jungle down near the Guatemalan border. Last week, after nine months of pioneering, the first 700 peasants of an estimated 20,000 were settling in at Campeche, and a whole new chapter in Mexican land reform was underway...

...line, summers are short and hot, winters long and bitterly cold, and the principal crops are wheat and millet. The men of North China are often as tall as Americans, relatively placid, ceremonial and-say the southerners-slow-thinking. South of the line, the climate is hot and humid, and the principal crop is rice. Broken up into valleys and small plains by innumerable mountain ranges, the South is the home of individualism, anarchy and mystical introspection. The short-statured southerners speak a multitude of dialects, are commercially enterprising and perennially rebellious-almost every Chinese revolution has originated...
