Santamaria Beach in Havana Province was a beautiful swimming area. The water was warm and very clear. As the waves came in from the horizon, I could see different shades of blue. Big leafy trees lined the shore. Clear white sand and a light but humid breeze surrounded us. In bright-colored swim suits, Cubans crowded the shore. Some had radios, cameras and cassette players. Others rode the surf on beach balls and inner tubes. The many shades of Cubans swimming together or relaxing in the sand made an impressive sight. No segregation. No arguments. When we hit the surf...
...Wednesday, July 31, when Haig learned of the evidence that would end Nixon's career. He hurried through the humid streets of Washington to Kissinger's State Department office. He told Kissinger what had been found. It was a curious time for these two old friends who had been through so much together. It was a time of relief, surely. They had talked many times before, and vaguely in the distance they had seen the end approaching, even without the new tapes...
...would like to say that Siddhartha is beautiful to look at. It was filmed in Northern India, and clearly the film-makers were trying very hard for breathtaking landscapes--they blur flowers, set suns galore, swoop in on reflecting bodies of water. But their idea of painting a humid. ethereal environment is fuzzy backgrounds, mist, and drippy trees. When they try to make a visual delight out of five straight minutes of someone being cremated (the embers glowing in the night), the effect is aesthetically negligible...
Enduring that curious flat state of humid thoughtlessness, there boiled within me enough fires of ambition and blind striving to exit the state but there was never enough heat to forge a steel hard version of truth. Perhaps the thrust of my departure propelled me high enough to see what I had been so charmed by and had blindly pursued in the name of fame and love of God as but the echo of an echo. The culture I aspired to see clearly would always by drowned by initial perceptions. Sunk beneath the latest translation and the re-re-echo...
...Mickey and Pluto and the others blown up to preternatural size, then guillotined; their eyes goggle from the shelves like big affable poached eggs. There is even a set of coolant waistcoats, their design a spin-off from NASA; they circulate a chemical refrigerant round the body. In this humid and swampy acreage of Florida, every hot duck on Main Street contains a hotter man wildly signaling...
