...trip around Bakshis and Zang's home store in Burlington shows that TSC is clearly a sanctuary for the affluent lawn warrior. Horse-racing helmets are displayed near hummingbird feeders, and outdoor paint, in John Deere Green for antique tractor collections, fills the shelves. ATVs share the center aisle with shiny lawn mowers. Udder cream comes in pretty clover tins (women have discovered its charms for chapped lips), and lawn trinkets are the hot item for spring. In the pet center, an aluminum bin full of chirping baby chickens is adjacent to model plastic horses for the kids...

Sure, a little of this goes a long way, but a lot of it goes even further. There's a mesmerizing, hummingbird quality to Scar Tissue that's hard to resist. It's a frank, unsparing, meticulous account of a life lived entirely on impulse, for pleasure and for kicks, and Kiedis (or possibly his co-author, Larry Sloman) has a gift for describing pleasure, especially that of playing music with your pals, something that rarely comes through on the page. Reno has a special advantage in its geography--it is smack against the California border and treats its high-cost, highly regulated neighbor the way a hummingbird does a flower. From 2000 to 2003, Reno has lapped up major operations of 17 California companies including Sun Microsystems and Charles Schwab, according to the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada, in addition to the 700,000-sq.-ft. distribution facility Amazon.com set up in 1999 and the third roasting-and-distribution center Starbucks opened. Microsoft, Dell and Pfizer all have operations there. An estimated 200,000 people migrate from California...

...home, 9,500 ft. above sea level, is a bright red frame house, with a hummingbird feeder, three or four cats, a chocolate Lab named Charma and a spectacular view of Pikes Peak. Visitors can see the plumes of the Hayman fire from the house, but the property is a model of caution. The firewood and the wood splitter are placed well away from the house, in accordance with Forest Service fireproofing guidelines. There's a golden eagle in the area; a black-bear sow comes and goes so freely it is practically a neighbor. Five times a week...
